IMO - there is no reliable way for a third party program to know whether any particular key is invalid, redundant or neither. Some registry cleaners may not know for sure whether a key is still being used by Windows or what detrimental effects removing it may have.

Perhaps you are correct for your computer, but you're wrong for all the ones I've ever owned. Cleaning the registry has a noticeable effect on a computer, otherwise I wouldn't waste my time. IMO, an easier way would be to make different, incremental type system images. That way you can go back to whichever point you want. For software testing or occasional-use big programs that I don't want to install on my main PC, I use VMware virtual machines.

I thought this was a shortcut - but it appears to be the CCleaner Program itself. Deleting the 'shortcut' I had created enabled me to update the program as I had always done in the past and solved all the peculiar problems!

Yes you have to be careful in that start menu. You can "Pin" an exe there with the built in facility. Alternatively you can make a shortcut to the exe then drag that there which retains the shortcut where you put it.

Right clicking what you propose to put there will reveal where it is a program or a shortcut in Properties. One thing that can add to confusion is that for some reason MS hides certain file extensions by default.
